How does Multi-Currency work?

Read this article to learn everything you need to know about multi-currency support in BlueTally

We recognize that many organizations purchase assets and equipment in different currencies - whether you have offices in multiple countries, buy from international suppliers, or simply operate in a market where more than one currency is common. BlueTally handles this automatically, so your reports and dashboards always show accurate totals in your company's default currency.

How it works

BlueTally uses a three-level currency fallback to determine what currency an item's purchase cost is in:

  • Item currency: If a currency is set directly on the item (asset, accessory, component, consumable, or license), that's what's used.

  • Location currency: If the item doesn't have its own currency but is assigned to a location that does, the location's currency is used.

  • Company default currency: If neither the item nor its location has a currency set, your company's default currency (configured in Settings) is used.

This means you don't need to tag every single item. If all items at a particular office are purchased in the same currency, just set it on the location and everything there inherits it automatically.

Reports and Dashboards

Anywhere BlueTally shows a financial total - report summaries, dashboard widgets, alert pages - items are automatically converted to your company's default currency before being summed. This ensures totals are meaningful even when individual items are tracked in different currencies.

Individual line items (e.g., in tables and detail views) continue to display in their native currency with the appropriate symbol and formatting.

Exchange Rates

Exchange rates are updated automatically every day. BlueTally uses these rates to perform conversions across all reports and summaries. You don't need to configure or manage exchange rates manually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I set my company's default currency?

Go to Settings -> Company Details and look for the Default Currency field. This is the currency that all report totals will be converted into.

Where do I set a currency on a location?

When creating or editing a location, you'll find a Currency field. Any item assigned to that location will inherit this currency unless the item has its own currency set.

Where do I set a currency on an individual item?

When creating or editing an asset, accessory, component, consumable, or license, you'll find a Currency field. This overrides both the location currency and the company default.

What happens if I don't set any currencies?

Everything defaults to your company's default currency. If you only operate in one currency, you don't need to do anything.

How often are exchange rates updated?

Once per day, automatically.

Which exchange rates does BlueTally use?

BlueTally uses market mid-rates sourced from Open Exchange Rates, covering 170+ currencies.

Do exchange rate changes affect historical data?

Converted totals in reports always use the latest available exchange rate. BlueTally does not store the exchange rate at the time of purchase - it converts using today's rate to give you a current-value view of your portfolio.
