BlueTally seamlessly integrates with Windows Autopilot by adding all your devices to BlueTally as assets.
Setup
To set up the Windows Autopilot integration, please refer to our comprehensive setup guide here. It includes screenshots and detailed instructions to help you effortlessly configure the integration in a few minutes.
Configuration
After completing the integration setup, you'll need to select how you want to configure the integration in BlueTally. Simply click the Profile icon in the top-right corner, then click the Integrations link. Navigate to the Device Management section and select the Windows Autopilot section.
Before enabling the integration, you'll need to click on the Test Connection button to ensure a successful setup. This test verifies both the credentials and permissions, ensuring they align with the setup guide and are configured correctly for the integration to function properly.
Here is the complete list of all the configuration options:
Default Status: Select which status you want devices added from Autopilot to have in BlueTally.
Default Location: Select which location you want devices added from Autopilot to have in BlueTally.
Default Department: Select which department you want devices added from Autopilot to have in BlueTally.
All devices from Autopilot will be added to BlueTally using their serial numbers as the Asset ID.
Once the device has been enrolled in Intune, our Intune integration will identify it as the same device and add all the details from Intune to the asset, letting you keep the full asset history from the time it was first added by Autopilot and preventing duplicates.
The Autopilot integration will create Product entries for all your unique models, and then corresponding Asset entries for each one. For example, let's say you have 100 Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme laptops. The integration will then create:
1x Category with the name Autopilot*
1x Manufacturer with the name Lenovo
1x Product with the name ThinkPad X1 Extreme
100x Assets using the Product ThinkPad X1 Extreme with the relevant asset details for that device, based on your configuration.
*BlueTally allows you to set up custom Category Mapping, or you can follow the default mapping options. See the sections below to use whatever works best for you.
Custom Category Mapping
You can set rules and other options to decide exactly which category each device type belongs to during the initial import and for every sync that comes after using our Category Mapping feature. Simply find the Category Mapping row in the Autopilot section of your BlueTally settings, and click Manage Category Mapping.
You can use the following mapping options:
Set a default category: pick the category new products should land in by default. If you don't set one, the integration keeps the existing behavior and falls back to a category named "Autopilot".
Name-based mapping rules: Build rules that match on the product name - contains, equals, starts with, or ends with - and route matches to the category of your choice (e.g. product name contains "iPhone" → Mobile Phones). Rules take priority over the default, and you can reorder them to control which one wins.
Apply to existing products: If you've already imported some or all of your devices, one click re-categorizes all existing products from Autopilot to match your current default and rules, lining up your existing inventory with future syncs.
Default Category Mapping
If you choose not to set up any Category Mapping settings, all the devices you import from Autopilot will automatically have the Category "Autopilot". However, you can change the categories of these products to any category of your choice.
Any new devices of the same product enrolled in Autopilot will be added to BlueTally using the existing product entry (and thus the category of your choice). Any new devices using products that don't exist will, by default, be created with the category Autopilot if no Category mapping rules have been set.
Updating your integration
Once the first sync has completed, you can change the categories of the products created by the integration from Autopilot to any category of your choice. Any new devices of the same product enrolled in Autopilot will be added to BlueTally using the existing product entry (and thus the category of your choice). Any new devices using products that don't exist will, by default, be created with the category Autopilot.
Once the integration is enabled, you can update the connection without disabling it and adjust all configuration settings.
When testing a new connection, the new one will be temporarily applied. If the connection succeeds, the new configuration will automatically overwrite the existing one. If it fails, your current settings will remain unchanged.
If there’s an issue with your connection (e.g., expired credentials), an error message will appear here. Administrators will also receive an email notification and see an alert within the app. To resolve the issue, click Update Connection, enter your new credentials, and click Test Connection.
Unclaiming Devices
There may come a time when you no longer use Autopilot in favor of a different MDM. If so, you'll want Intune to unclaim these devices so your new MDM integration can claim them and ensure the device data stays up-to-date. Follow the steps below to unclaim your devices:
Visit the Autopilot section in your BlueTally account integrations page (accessed by clicking Integrations in the dropdown menu found under the profile icon in the upper-right corner of your BlueTally account)
Disable your Autopilot integration by clicking the Disable button found at the bottom of the section
New text will appear at the bottom of the section with a dark gray button that says "Remove Autopilot data from assets". Click the button.
Ensure that the Merge option is enabled on your new MDM integration
Your new MDM integration will claim any of the devices previously associated with Intune that are present in the new MDM.
This process will allow you to seamlessly connect your devices from one MDM to another, without deleting them outright.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often does the sync run?
The sync runs every 10 minutes. If you have a lot of devices in your Autopilot tenant, it can take a bit longer than 10 minutes to complete each sync. Please note that the first sync can take up to 40 minutes to complete.
Is the sync two-way, or can any changes be made in my Autopilot tenant from BlueTally?
No, all our integrations are strictly one-way only (from Autopilot to BlueTally), so you're never risking any changes being made in your Autopilot tenant by our systems.
Can I change the category of the products after the first sync?
Yes! You can even pre-determine what you want the category to be for each product before your first sync if you use the Custom Category Mapping feature. This will allow you to set rules and default categories for certain device types so that you never need to manually update the category yourself.
That being said, if you choose to rely on the default category mapping, you will still be able to change the category after the first sync. For example, if you change the category of the product ThinkPad X1 from the default category (Autopilot) to your own category (Laptops), any new assets of the product ThinkPad X1 synced via the integration will be added to the Laptop category. Only brand new products will be added under the Autopilot category.
Can I change the Asset ID mapping to anything other than the Serial Number?
Unfortunately, no, as that is the only unique identifier for the devices in Autopilot.
What happens when the device is enrolled in Intune?
Once the device has been enrolled in Intune, our Intune integration will understand that it's the same asset and won't create a duplicate. It will simply 'claim' that asset and add all the data from Intune to it, as it does for normal assets from Intune. That way, you'll keep the full history of the asset from the time it was added by Autopilot.
Can I connect multiple Autopilot tenants to my BlueTally account?
That isn't possible, unfortunately. Each BlueTally account can only have one Autopilot tenant connected to it via the integration; however, if you are using multi-tenancy, you can create a sub-tenant and connect it to a different tenant!
Can I still connect my Autopilot instance to BlueTally even if using Microsoft Government Community Cloud (GCC)?
Yes! You'll just need to make sure that you toggle on the option specifically for Microsoft Government Community Cloud (GCC) if your instance is hosted on the microsoft.us domain. You'll find this option in the Autopilot section of your BlueTally account settings, between the OAuth 2.0 token endpoint (v2) field and the Test Connection button.
